Veterinary Prescription Drug Pet Medications
[Veterinary Drug Name]
Generic Name: Compound Niclosamide Tablets
[Composition] Niclosamide, Levamisole Hydrochloride
[Character] Light yellow tablet.
[Pharmacological Action]
Niclosamide is an anthelmintic for tapeworms. It is effective against Dipylidium caninum, Taenia pisiformis, Echinococcus granulosus, and Hymenolepis in dogs, but less effective against Echinococcus multilocularis. Its mechanism of action is inhibiting the tapeworm’s glucose absorption and uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria, blocking the tricarboxylic acid cycle, leading to lactate accumulation, which kills the tapeworm. Niclosamide is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, maintaining high concentrations in the intestines. A small amount is absorbed and metabolized into inactive aminochloronitrofurazone metabolites, which are excreted mainly through the feces.
Levamisole hydrochloride is active against most nematodes in dogs. Its mechanism is stimulating the parasympathetic and sympathetic ganglia of the worms, with overall nicotine-like effects. At high concentrations, levamisole disrupts the nematodes’ glucose metabolism by blocking fumarate reductase and succinate oxidation, causing paralysis of the worms, and expelling live worms from the body.
